Balance for Better!

It’s another year, another theme for International Women’s Day. Let’s take two steps back and look at the previous years, which themes have provided a solutionist foundation to the question of “gender inequality”.

The year 2016 saw a Pledge for parity; a consciousness of the world agreeing to come together in solidarity for the sole purpose of gender equality. It saw an increasing awareness of the issues surrounding inequality of the sexes. This awareness raised the responsiveness of the world to committing to gender parity by taking deliberate steps to ensure equality; steps in our personal lives, community and country. Of course, these deliberate steps were not only exclusive to women but also called for the inclusive action of men towards the goal of gender equality.

We remember Press for Progress. A wake-up call for women all over to take their place. A call to women to not get tired and to continue to push for progress towards gender equality. A call to people all over the world to join in pushing global attention towards achieving the ultimate goal of gender equality.

We are here now! Calling for a balance for better. Highlighting the need for the gender gap to be closed.
The World Economic Forum’s 2018 Global Gender Gap Report highlights that globally, the average distance between us and parity is at 68% as compared to the previous year. This is quite an improvement.

Everyone has a part to play in closing the gender gap- from activism to worldwide action and it is more exciting to find that everywhere in the world, individuals are taking a stand to bring to reality this balance.  Balance drives a better working world where its absence is noticed, and the presence is revered.  We see countries such as the Bahamas, Colombia, Philippines achieving full parity which is good news.

The International Women’s Day Organization highlights; Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue. The race is on for the gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports coverage and Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Let us start today and always to thrive for this balance, in every sphere of life.

AWLO in its 10 years of existence has been supporting women to be proactive using their in-built creative abilities to develop themselves, develop new businesses, attain leadership positions to foster growth in the society.

We strongly believe that all human beings are free to develop their personal abilities and make choices without limitations. Women however have been put in tight corners especially in the assignment of rigid gender roles.

In AWLO, we believe there are no specific gender roles in a balanced society and thus we encourage women to step up, embrace their talents and create a balanced world for a better tomorrow.
